The Hiawatha Water Trail Association (HWTA) has undertaken the following projects to further develop the Hiawatha Water Trail (HWT). Click here to find out how you can help out.

  1. East Channel Lighthouse
 Grand Island NRASignage
    • Goals are to develop simple & consistent signage throughout the entire water trail to mark public lands such as access points and campsites. Additional goals include informational kiosks at high traffic areas to promote the historic, cultural and natural history of the trail as well as safety information.
    • Signage developed in cooperation with PRNL and GINRA.
    • Signage has been purchased in 2005. Signs appeared at PRNL and GINRA in 2005 and look for them at other HWT sites by 2006-7.
  2. Trail Map
    • Purchase a trail map to use in navigating along the trail. Access points, campsites, public lands, nav aids, water depth and more are included. Printed on water proof paper with the proceeds going to support the HWTA and it’s mission.
    • Map printing was funded by the Michigan Coastal Management Program funded through NOAA.
  3. Campsites
    • Goals are to develop additional campsites along the trail between Big Bay and Munising.
    • Several people are working on this project. May possibly be adding 2-4 additional sites by 2007-8.
    • Chocolay Township has received funding from the MI DNR Trust Fund to build a locker, campsite and other amenities at the Chocolay River boat launch.
    • Look to grant funding to develop sites.
  4. Paddle Sports LockerCopyright 2004
    • Goals are to place lockers in communities (Big Bay, Marquette, Chocolay Township/Harvey, Munising and Grand Marais) and other appropriate locations. Lockers enable paddlers to securely lock boat and all gear and then go into town for any or all of the following reasons: restock supplies, grab a meal, stay in a hotel, site see, shop.
    • Locker locations have been selected in Big Bay, Marquette, Chocolay Township/Harvey and Munising.
    • Locker construction via grant funding.
    • Chocolay Township has received funding from the MI DNR Trust Fund to build a locker, campsite and other amenities at the Chocolay River boat launch.
  5. Access Points Brochure
    • Goals are to promote the water trail through a free and widely distributed brochure that includes safety information.
    • Brochure has been printed annually since 2002. A Down Wind Sports grant helped with the initial printing. In 2005, a grant from the Michigan Coastal Management Program funded through NOAA helped to fund it’s most recent redesign.
    • Advertisers fund the printing cost.
